Markedness and Lexical Typicality in Mandarin Acceptability Judgments

چکیده

It has long been known that native speakers judge nonlexical forms as more acceptable the more lexically typical they are (i.e., similar to real words). It has also been shown that speakers judge less marked (i.e., universally more natural) structures as more acceptable than more marked structures. In this study, we investigate for the first time how markedness and lexical typicality interact, using data from a large corpus of experimentally collected Mandarin native-speaker judgments of nonlexical syllables. We defined the lexical typicality of a test item in terms of how many lexical Mandarin syllables share the item‟s onset consonant, and defined markedness in terms of how many phoneme inventories have this consonant cross-linguistically. Consistent with prior research, both markedness and lexical typicality improved acceptability, but the two factors also interacted positively: the lexical typicality effect was stronger for less marked forms than for more marked forms. The same interaction appears in a reanalysis of the English nonword judgment data of Hayes and White (2013). This interaction is not predicted by standard Optimality Theory, but it can be formalized with conjunctive coordination, the inverse of the more familiar local conjunction, whereby a coordinated constraint is obeyed if and only if both of its component constraints are obeyed.

Argument-Function Mismatches in Mandarin Resultatives: A Lexical Mapping Account

This paper seeks to account for the argument-function mismatches observed in Mandarin resultative compound verbs. The account is formulated within a revised Lexical Mapping Theory which incorporates a unified mapping principle. Under the simplest and also the strictest interpretation of this mapping principle (or the θ-criterion), a composite role, formed by two composing roles, receives syntac...

Lexically Specific Constraints: Gradience, Learnability, and Perception

Lexically specific constraints are indexed versions of constraints that apply only when a morpheme that bears that index is evaluated by the grammar. They have been used in Optimality Theory to deal with exceptions (e.g. Hammond 1995, Kraska-Szlenk 1997, Pater 2000), and have also been applied to the lexical strata of Japanese and other languages (Fukuzawa 1999, Itô and Mester 1999, 2001, Gelba...

Grammaticality, Acceptability, and Probability: A Probabilistic View of Linguistic Knowledge

The question of whether humans represent grammatical knowledge as a binary condition on membership in a set of well-formed sentences, or as a probabilistic property has been the subject of debate among linguists, psychologists, and cognitive scientists for many decades. Acceptability judgments present a serious problem for both classical binary and probabilistic theories of grammaticality. Thes...

What's in a name? Brain activity reveals categorization processes differ across languages.

The linguistic relativity hypothesis proposes that speakers of different languages perceive and conceptualize the world differently, but do their brains reflect these differences? In English, most nouns do not provide linguistic clues to their categories, whereas most Mandarin Chinese nouns provide explicit category information, either morphologically (e.g., the morpheme "vehicle" che1 in the n...

Worldlikeness: A Web-based Tool for Typological Psycholinguistic Research

In this paper, we introduce Worldlikeness, a web-based tool for collecting and sharing cross-linguistic wordlikeness judgments (nonce word acceptability judgments) to facilitate typological psycholinguistic research. Typological psycholinguistic research is essential since crucial factors affecting language processing vary across languages, but these factors often too confounded to tease apart ...
